ACNE AWARENESS MONTH

BY KELLY FORDHAM, PA-C

Acne is one of the most common conditions we see in clinic day today and affects nearly all of us (hello mask-ne)! It is not a harmful condition, but its impact can extend past the surface of the skin and affect one’s self esteem and overall well being. Often times the hyperpigmentation (dark spots) and scarring are even more bothersome than the acne breakouts themselves.

What causes acne? A common misconception is that acne is caused by poor hygiene. Dirt, oil and makeup can clog pores and contribute, but the cause of acne is far more complicated. Acne is complex and occurs due to a combination of factors such as genetics, hormones, environment, diet and stress. Many think that acne only affects teenagers, but adults may also continue to have acne and some even report new onset of acne in adulthood.

How do you treat acne? There are many different types of acne, and treatment is largely based on the type of acne and severity of acne an individual is experiencing. These treatments range from over-the-counter products to prescription therapy. Often times it takes a combination of OTC products, medical-grade skincare, medical treatments and prescription therapy including cleansers, topical medicines and oral medicines.

If you are struggling with acne we are here to help! Schedule an appointment to see one of our medical providers so we can discuss treatment options based off of your type of acne. We are able to provide a comprehensive approach by combining a prescription regimen, medical-grade skincare and treatments in our Aesthetic and Laser Center. We can work together to get you on the path to clearer skin!
