“To say miraDry changed my life is an understatement…”

We were honored to receive this incredible testimonial from one of our miraDry patients. Read the full story below:

“I have been struggling with excessive sweating of my underarms ever since puberty. I would always sweat just enough that it would be visible on the underarms of my clothing all the time, even in the winter months. I tried different deodorants my whole life; spray, gel, clinical strength, you name it. I never had much of an issue with body odor throughout the day, but after wearing a shirt more than once, it seemed as though the odor would linger in the underarm area even after washing and spot treating. White clothing was never an option for me. After just one wear, I would notice my white or lighter-colored shirts would be stained yellow so I avoided them at all costs. The sweating and stains were very embarrassing to me and took a huge toll on my confidence and mental health all my life, but I had pretty much given up on finding solutions because nothing I was doing was working.

In 2021, I decided it was time to see a dermatologist. I tried prescription-strength deodorants that just left a giant burning, itching, red rash. I tried prescription wipes that seemed to work but had to be applied several times daily and left me experiencing uncomfortable side effects that didn’t leave me feeling like it was worth continuing. My next step was underarm Botox injections. I did these injections for about a year and they helped significantly with the sweating. Though my insurance covered most of the costs, I still was forced to pay a copay that would range from $120-200 each visit, which was typically every 3 months, and this didn’t include the copays for the office visit. While I was satisfied with the results at the time, it was becoming increasingly expensive as time went on, as it was something I would have to continue paying for every 3 months for the rest of my life, as well as find the time to fit in the office visit into my busy schedule.

I had heard of miraDry years prior while in college but it was never an option for me because of costs. After considering the ongoing cost of the Botox injections and appointments, I decided that miraDry would be the better and more permanent option and it was time to make the investment. I had been receiving various treatments at Village for some time now and knew they offered miraDry, so it seemed like a no brainer. During my consultation, Jane was very attentive and listened to my story and my concerns. She informed me of the risks, what to expect, recovery, and provided ways for me to check in with her if any concerns arose. She was very thorough and educational throughout the entire process, even teaching me that not only would miraDry help with sweating permanently, but the odor as well! The procedure itself was a breeze. She made sure I was comfortable the entire time and I didn’t experience any pain during the entire procedure! Jane prepared me well for the swelling in the days to come, the worst of it the first 2 days, but lessening with each day for about a week. Jane insisted that icing as much as possible would help with the swelling and she couldn’t have been more right! A 2 hour procedure, some swelling, and some slight numbness in the treatment area and I was sweat AND odor free after a very long 18 years!!

To say miraDry changed my life is an understatement. I am 3 months post treatment and it still is the best investment I have ever made for myself! I personally have experienced very minimal side effects, but was very prepared by Jane the entire time which I feel made a huge difference in the recovery. I’ve had one miraDry treatment and I’m currently experiencing a 100% reduction in sweat AND odor!! I can wear white shirts again and I’m saving tons on deodorant! I’m very grateful to Jane, Village Dermatology, and miraDry for making me feel confident again! The entire experience was a pleasurable, positive one and I couldn’t have asked for anything better!”

The Importance of Choosing Non-Comedogenic Skincare Products

Acne breakouts are common, especially between the ages of 11 and 30. Dermatologists say 4 out of 5 people experience acne during their teenage and young adult years. This common skin condition can cause considerable discomfort and embarrassment. Effective acne treatments are available, but if you have acne-prone skin, you must be careful about what you put on your face.

Many common ingredients in skincare and cosmetics can cause clogged pores and worsen acne. On the other hand, certain ingredients can help prevent pore blockages and acne.

When choosing skincare products for acne-prone skin, one word you should become familiar with is non-comedogenic.

Please continue reading to find out what this word means, which skincare ingredients are non-comedogenic, and why products with these ingredients are important for acne-prone individuals.

What does non-comedogenic mean?

The medical definition of a non-comedogenic ingredient is an ingredient that will not block the pores in the skin. Pores are tiny openings in the skin’s surface through which the skin releases oil and sweat.

Clogged pores are a common cause of acne. The buildup of dirt, oil, and dead skin cells can lead to clogged pores in the skin. People with oily skin are more likely to have clogged pores. Using non-comedogenic skincare products can help prevent clogged pores and reduce or eliminate acne breakouts.

What are some non-comedogenic ingredients in skincare products?

Ingredients that are non-comedogenic and beneficial for acne-prone skin include:

  • Salicylic acid
  • Benzoyl peroxide
  • Resorcinol
  • Sulfur

These non-comedogenic ingredients exfoliate the skin and/or reduce the number of bacteria on the skin’s surface, helping reduce the severity and frequency of acne breakouts.

Additionally, certain non-comedogenic oils hydrate and moisturize the skin without blocking pores. These include:

  • Sunflower oil
  • Grapeseed oil
  • Hempseed oil
  • Neem oil
  • Sweet almond oil
  • Shea Butter
  • Coconut Oil

If you have acne-prone skin, it’s a good idea to look for these ingredients in your skincare products. Many skincare products are labeled “non-comedogenic” to save you the trouble of checking the ingredients individually.

How can you tell if a skincare product is non-comedogenic?

Many skincare products are labeled “non-comedogenic” or “non-oily.” So, you can check the package and choose accordingly.

Unfortunately, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not regulate over-the-counter skincare products and cosmetics. Therefore, there is no way to know if a product is truly non-comedogenic. Also, there is no standardized method of measuring the comedogenic potential of a product, which further complicates the process.

A good rule of thumb is to choose anti-acne skincare products highly rated by medical professionals. Your dermatologist can also help you choose tried and tested non-comedogenic skincare products.

I have acne-prone skin. Which skincare ingredients should I avoid?

Some common offenders that can cause breakouts in acne-prone individuals include:

  • Isopropyl myristate
  • Isopropyl palmitate
  • Isopropyl isostearate
  • Isostearyl neopentanoate
  • Butyl stearate
  • Octyl palmitate
  • Octyl stearate
  • Decyl oleate
  • Myristyl myristate
  • Isocetyl stearate
  • PPG-2 (propylene glycol-2)
  • D&C red dyes
  • Lanolins

It can be tedious to go through all the ingredients in your skincare products. Instead, if you have a breakout after using a product, check the ingredient list and note any known offenders. This way, you can avoid the same ingredients in the future.

What else should I do to prevent acne?

Here are some habits that can worsen acne, which you should avoid:

  • Using comedogenic skincare products.
  • Trying too many new acne treatments over a short period.
  • Sharing makeup or makeup applicators with others.
  • Sleeping with makeup on.
  • Washing your face more than twice a day.
  • Using drying ingredients like alcohol or astringents, which irritate the skin.
  • Scrubbing your skin clean.
  • Rubbing sweat from your skin with a towel after working out.
  • Popping or squeezing your pimples.

Dermatologists recommend using non-comedogenic skincare products formulated for acne-prone skin. Give each product 6-8 weeks to work before switching to another product.

It’s worth noting that clogged pores are only one cause of acne. Other factors like hormonal changes, stress, diet, and medication side effects can also cause breakouts.

If you have severe acne breakouts or feel unhappy or uncomfortable in social situations because of your acne, it may be time to consult a dermatologist.

Skincare Ingredients for Acne-Prone Skin

Acne can affect people of all ages. For some, dealing with acne can be a source of embarrassment in their social life and can impact their general mood. Thankfully, there are many skincare products specially formulated to treat acne. In this article, we will talk about four key ingredients in skincare products that are particularly beneficial for acne-prone skin.

Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide is an antiseptic and a common ingredient in skincare products for acne-prone skin. It helps to reduce the number of bacteria on the skin’s surface and unclogs pores by removing dead skin cells. Benzoyl peroxide can treat current acne lesions as well as reduce future breakouts. It is particularly effective in treating inflammatory acne with red, swollen, and sore bumps (pimples).

Benzoyl peroxide is found in both over-the-counter and prescription acne products, such as cleansers, foams, soaps, gels, lotions, and creams. It is often the first line of treatment for acne-prone skin. Individuals may benefit from starting with a lower concentration first and gradually increasing to higher concentrations.

While generally well-tolerated by most skin types, benzoyl peroxide may cause itching, burning, redness, swelling, or peeling in some cases. If this occurs, discontinue use and consult your dermatologist.

Our Favorite Product: Village Dermatology’s 5% BPO Wash
Village Dermatology’s BPO 5% cleanser uses micronized benzoyl peroxide that penetrates the skin’s pores for a gentle yet effective cleanse.

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid that exfoliates the skin, removing dead cells from the surface and reducing oil production. It is a common ingredient in anti-acne skincare products and works by unclogging pores to prevent breakouts.

Over-the-counter products generally contain 0.5% to 2% salicylic acid. Dermatologists can perform chemical peels with higher concentrations for more intense treatments. Salicylic acid helps with pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, redness, and hyperpigmentation.

Though generally well-tolerated, salicylic acid can cause mild irritation, such as burning or stinging, and may lead to dryness or peeling.

Our Favorite Product: Epionce Lytic Tx
Epionce’s Lytic Tx is a moderate-strength product that cleanses pores and improves acne-prone skin’s appearance while reducing redness without irritation. Shop it here.

Retinol

Retinol is a vitamin A derivative commonly found in anti-acne and anti-aging products. It exfoliates the outer skin layer, removing dead cells, oil, and dirt, and unclogs pores. Retinol also promotes collagen and elastin production, resulting in a softer, youthful appearance.

Retinol concentrations in over-the-counter products typically range from 0.25% to 1.5%. Starting with lower concentrations is best for sensitive skin, increasing gradually as tolerated.

Our Favorite Product: Alastin Renewal 0.25 Retinol
This product contains 0.25% retinol, perfect for sensitive skin, to exfoliate and stimulate collagen production. Shop it here.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA)

Alpha hydroxy acids, like glycolic, lactic, and citric acids, are commonly found in acne skincare products. They help exfoliate the skin by shedding dead cells and clearing debris that can clog pores. AHAs are beneficial in preventing acne breakouts and improving skin texture and complexion.

Anti-acne products generally contain AHAs in concentrations under 10%. Dermatologists do not recommend using concentrations above 15% without supervision due to potential side effects, such as itching or inflammation.

Our Favorite Product: Neocutis Exfoliating Cleanser
This 9.9% glycolic acid gel cleanser removes impurities that cause acne and revitalizes skin without harsh sulfates or dyes. Shop it here.

Changing to a Fall Skincare Routine

The changing seasons can have a dramatic effect on your skin.  To keep your skin looking its best, you should change your skincare routine with the seasons.  As the weather goes from hot and humid in summer to cool and dry in the fall, some tweaks to your skincare routine can keep your skin looking healthy and radiant.

Here are some of our dermatologists-recommended tips for maximizing your skincare routine this fall.

Use Thicker Skincare Products

In the summer months, there’s more humidity in the air. This helps your skin stay moisturized and protects your skin’s natural barrier. Your skin loses moisture when the weather transitions into cooler, drier air in the fall. This is especially true once colder weather sets in and you start using heaters indoors. The loss of moisture in your skin disrupts its protective barrier. These changes lead to dryness, irritation, and increased skin sensitivity.

One of the things you can do to counteract this dehydrating effect is to use thicker skincare products. For example, choose a facial moisturizer, body lotion, and lip products that contain ingredients designed to help your skin retain moisture. It might mean you’ll have to switch from a lighter water-based gel ideal for summer to a thicker oil-based cream during the fall. Other ingredients in skincare products that can nourish your skin include hyaluronic acid, anti-oxidants, and sun protection.

Switch to a Mild Cleanser

Your skin makes less oil during the cooler fall weather. A harsh cleanser or soap can further strip away your skin’s natural oil barrier. Some thicker moisturizers and lotions used during the fall can clog your pores and cause acne breakouts. If you wash your face too frequently, it can further dry your skin. Keeping your skin clean and hydrated can become a challenge in the fall.

Consider switching to a mild cleanser as part of your fall skincare routine. Avoid cleansers that use alcohol as a main ingredient as alcohol can dry out your skin. If you feel any cleanser is causing worsening of your acne, try another brand.

Alastin Gentle Cleanser

This gentle cleanser removes impurities without drying or irritating the skin.  This cleanser is self-foaming and contains calming antioxidants

Cruelty-free, gluten-free, paraben-free, fragrance-free

Reduce Exfoliant Use

Humid and warm temperatures during the summer provide increased oil to the skin. So, it is common to use specific skincare products like exfoliants to decrease the level of oil on the skin. However, this increase in oil within the skin declines during the fall and winter months.

Consider switching to a gentler exfoliant when fall comes around. Also, try limiting the number of exfoliant products you use and how frequently you use them. As part of your fall skincare routine, pick products that not only exfoliate but also boost hydration. Look for ingredients like lactic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that can gently exfoliate your skin without dehydrating the skin.

Also, choosing “leave-on” products rather than wash-off ones can help some individuals restore a healthy skin barrier. This can help reduce dryness and improve dullness, skin texture, and skin tone.

Don’t Forget Sunscreen

When the sun is beating down on you during the summertime, it’s easy to remember your sunscreen. But in the cooler fall weather, you can slack off. However, while UV radiation is greater in the summer months, it is present in all four seasons, including the fall and winter and on cloudy days. Exposure to UV radiation can speed up skin aging and increase your risk of skin cancer.

Dermatologists recommend using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF30 every 2 hours to protect against UVA and UVB radiation. The only difference is that you probably don’t need to reapply the sunscreen often during the fall because you sweat less. You can also go without sunscreen if you spend most of your time indoors.

Skincare hack – As part of your fall skincare routine, pick a moisturizer that contains SPF (like Revision Intellishade). This way, you can kill two birds with one stone – reduce dryness and protect your skin from the sun.

Revision Intellishade

This anti-aging moisturizer with broad-spectrum SPF 45 is formulated to correct, protect, conceal, brighten and hydrate skin. Developed with over 20 age-defying beneficial ingredients, this multipurpose moisturizer is perfect for a busy lifestyle.

Avoid Long, Hot Showers

With the cooler temperatures rolling in, it can be tempting to crank up the water temperature in your shower or tub. But hot water can cause your skin to become dry, red, itchy, and cracked. The cool, dry weather can further worsen these symptoms and intensify skin conditions like eczema.

Avoid taking long, hot showers or soaks in the tub during the fall and winter. Instead, bathe in lukewarm water and keep your showers as short as possible. Moisturize immediately after you shower. This helps to rehydrate and soothe your skin and lock in moisture.

Just a few changes to your fall skincare routine can help your skin look its best. Be sure to consult our Skin Specialists in the Skin for Life Boutique if you have dry skin, acne, or other skin conditions. Our expert dermatology team is available to assist you in choosing skincare products that best suit your individual needs.

What is the best anti-aging cream?

As we age, there are natural changes in practically every organ system in our bodies.  But none are more visible than the changes that occur in aging skin.  While the natural aging process cannot be stopped, we can take steps to slow the effects and reverse some of the most obvious signs of skin aging.

What causes skin aging?

Age-related skin changes occur due to both genetic and environmental factors. Changes in the natural aging process are controlled by our genes. Other age-related changes in the skin are due to environmental factors like sun exposure and nutrition. Preventive measures, such as using sunscreen, can help slow environmental damage\’s effects.

Common aging changes in skin and ways to reduce them

Thin Skin

With age, the outer layer of skin called the epidermis becomes thinner. This change causes the skin to become less robust and more susceptible to damage.

Skincare products and cosmetic treatments that stimulate new collagen formation in the skin can help to address problems like aging skin. Retinol creams can help form collagen and address signs of aging by helping your skin renew itself more frequently.

Dry Skin

The sebaceous (oil) glands in the skin become less active with age. This change is less severe in men\’s skin and generally occurs after age 80. In women, the decrease in oil production occurs around menopause. Less oil makes it harder for the skin to stay moist, leading to dryness and itchiness.

Dry skin is also problematic because it undermines your skin barrier. A healthy skin barrier is very important when discussing skin health because it keeps bad things out of our skin and keeps all the good stuff inside.

Skincare ointments and hyaluronic acid creams can help combat age-related skin dryness.

Pigmentation and dark spots

The number of melanocytes (pigmented cells) in the skin decreases with age. In response, the remaining melanocytes enlarge. These natural changes result in increased age spots or liver spots (solar lentigines) appearing in sun-exposed areas.

Some of the ingredients in skincare products that may fade age spots include retinoids, azelaic acid, and hydroquinone. People with darker skin tones may benefit from ingredients such as vitamin C and kojic acid.

Cosmetic treatments like laser skin resurfacing, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and microneedling may also help reduce the appearance of age spots.

Reduced strength and elasticity

Changes in the skin\’s connective tissue lead to decreased strength and elasticity with age. These changes are called elastosis and can give the skin a leathery or worn appearance, as is commonly seen in people with excessive sun exposure, such as sailors and farmers.

Retinol and retinoids in skincare products may help to improve skin elasticity. Cosmetic procedures like chemical peels and laser treatments are also effective.

Fine lines and wrinkles

Over time, using facial muscles to smile, squint, frown, etc., can develop grooves below the skin\’s surface. With age, the skin loses its flexibility and cannot spring back, forming fine lines and wrinkles.

Anti-aging skincare products that contain retinol, vitamin C, and vitamin B5 can help to reverse some of these aging changes. Laser skin resurfacing, Botox, dermal fillers, chemical peels, and dermabrasion are some cosmetic procedures that can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Loss of collagen

Collagen is an essential protein that plays a key role in the structure and function of the skin. With age, the body makes significantly less collagen. This, in turn, is responsible for many common signs of aging, such as thin skin, fine lines and wrinkles, and reduced strength and flexibility.

Ingredients such as retinols, peptides, and growth factors that stimulate collagen formation in the skin can help slow down the process and reverse some signs of aging.

Slowed cell turnover

In young adults, skin cells are renewed every 28-42 days. The skin renewal cycle can be as long as 84 days in older individuals. This results in the build-up of dead skin cells on the surface, making aging skin look dull and tired.

Skincare products that contain chemical messengers, like growth factors or peptides, encourage more rapid cell turnover, which leads to more refreshed-looking skin.

Fragile blood vessels

With age, the blood vessels in the skin become more fragile. This can lead to bruising and bleeding, called senile purpura or actinic purpura.

Skincare products that contain vitamin K, epidermal growth factors, and bioflavonoids may help reduce the appearance of age-related bruising.

Is there a “best” anti-aging cream?

As you can probably tell, the \”best\” anti-aging cream (or skincare product) depends on what you try to correct.  Furthermore, some individuals are sensitive to certain ingredients within popular skincare products.  Finding a quality skincare product that you will use and that works well with your skin type is going to be the best solution for your skincare needs.  If you do not know where to start, please reach out to our Skincare Specialist at our Skin for Life Boutique, and they will be glad to assist you!

What causes brown spots on the skin?

They go by names like brown spots, age spots, liver spots, sunspots, and solar lentigines. But whatever you call them, brown spots are a common sign of aging and can have a negative effect on your self-confidence. While most brown spots are harmless, they can occasionally be cancerous. This is why it is important to seek qualified dermatology care when determining whether a spot on your skin is harmless or not.

What does a brown spot mean?

If a brown spot is determined to be non-cancerous by a qualified medical professional, then brown spots can occur for a variety of reasons. Brown spots or age spots are small, dark, flat areas of skin that vary in size and can range in color from yellowish to dark brown. They usually develop on sun-exposed areas such as the face, neck, chest, back, forearms, and hands. Brown spots are common in people over the age of 50 (which is why they’re also sometimes called wisdom spots). But younger people who have had a lot of sun exposure can also develop age spots. Most brown spots are not dangerous. However, many people want to have their brown spots treated for cosmetic reasons.

Why do brown spots occur?

Brown spots are a natural part of aging. They occur due to sun damage over the years. The ultraviolet (UV) rays in sunlight cause the pigment cells in the skin to become overactive and make more melanin. Melanin is the pigment that gives our skin its color. Age spots develop when years of sun exposure cause the melanin to clump together at high concentrations in small areas of sun-exposed skin.

Other possible reasons for developing dark spots in the skin can include:

  • Hormonal changes: Small patches of discoloration called melasma can develop in the skin due to hormonal changes. This is more common in women, especially during pregnancy.
  • Inflammation: Skin conditions such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, or injuries can lead to inflammation and dark spots.
  • Wound healing: Hyperpigmentation can develop after the healing of wounds such as burns, cuts, or insect bites. These usually fade with time.
  • Medical Conditions: People with diabetes can develop acanthosis nigricans, which consists of dark, velvety spots in the skin that resemble age spots.
  • Medication side effects: Some medications can cause increased pigmentation in the skin as a side effect. Typical examples are tetracycline (antibiotic) and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

How do you get rid of age spots?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

One of the quickest ways to get rid of brown spots is a light treatment, which is usually done with intense pulsed light or IPL. The light targets the melanin in the age spot and breaks it up. The body then naturally clears up the broken fragments of pigment, resulting in fading of the brown spot.

Chemical Peels

Another way to get rid of age spots is with chemical peels. This is a quick and convenient in-office treatment in which a chemical solution is painted on the skin’s surface. The acid gently exfoliates the skin and promotes new skin growth. The treatment can help fade age spots in the skin, but the results are generally slower to appear compared to a treatment like IPL.

Other cosmetic treatments that may help reduce the appearance of age spots include dermabrasion, microdermabrasion, microneedling, and cryotherapy.

Prescription Medications

Prescription skin-lightening creams can help eliminate dark spots by bleaching the skin. They usually contain hydroquinone with or without retinoids (tretinoin). These ingredients can cause mild skin irritation, dryness, and redness. Also, it can take several months to notice a difference in brown spots.

Skincare Products

We recommend Cyspera Intensive System™. This advanced formula is clinically proven to give you a more even skin tone by lightening blotchy and darkened areas of skin. It also prevents new age spots from forming.  Cyspera is suitable for all skin tones and skin types. It has an exfoliating action that gently removes dead skin cells and improves skin tone naturally.

When should I be worried about brown spots?

Most brown spots are harmless and cause only cosmetic concerns. However, if you have a brown spot that has grown rapidly, is multicolored, or bleeds, you should see a dermatologist without delay. It could potentially be a cancerous lesion that needs immediate treatment.

Collagen is a protein found in many tissues in the body, such as the bones, muscles, skin, and hair.  Collagen keeps the skin from sagging and gives it a plump, youthful appearance.  The body makes collagen naturally, but this essential protein’s production slows as you age.  As early as your mid-20s, your skin begins to lose collagen.  In women, the collagen content of the skin can fall by up to 30% during menopause.  This natural process results in the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines as well as thin, dry, and less-taut skin.

Several effective skincare products can help to REBUILD collagen.  These products stimulate the formation of new collagen and repair damaged collagen.

Some products, such as the Alastin Regenerating Skin Nectar, help to enhance the results of cosmetic treatments like IPL, chemical peels, and microneedling.  Others, such as SkinMedica\’s TNS Advanced Plus Serum, help to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and refine skin tone and texture.  The specially formulated Village Dermatology Firming Facial Serum promotes collagen formation, giving your skin a smoother, more radiant, and youthful appearance.  All of these products fit into the REBUILD category, and once you find a good product that works for you in this category, you have 1 of your Core 4 completed.  Congratulations!

Renew

Speed Up Cellular Repair

Penetrates deep beneath the surface of the skin to help slough away dead skin cells and speed renewal.

If you\’ve ever wondered why babies have such soft skin, it has to do with the skin renewal process. In babies, skin cells renew every 14 days. By the teenage years, this process takes 28 days. In young adults, the skin renewal cycle is further lengthened to 28-42 days. In people over the age of 50, skin renewal can take up to 84 days. Therefore, your skin takes longer to repair and replace damaged cells as you grow older. As a result, more dead skin cells build up on the top layer of your skin, making your skin look dull and tired.

Skincare products that help to RENEW your skin penetrate below the surface and speed up skin renewal. These products slough away dead skin cells, revealing healthy, beautiful skin.

The Epionce Lite Lytic TX cleanses pores deep within the skin and smoothens the skin surface, reduces visible imperfections, softens skin texture, and gives you a more even skin tone. This gentle product is suitable even for very sensitive skin, including thinned elderly skin. The Green Cream Level 3 is an excellent skin renewal option for people new to using retinol-based skincare products. This high-potency product is formulated to minimize skin irritation caused by retinol. Still, it simultaneously allows you to gradually move up through multiple product levels and increase your skin’s tolerance to retinol. Retinol is considered the gold standard in improving the healthy appearance of aging skin.

Got a great product that RENEWS your skin? Great! That product fits nicely into your 2nd Core. Combine that with your REPAIR product, and you are halfway to a complete skincare regimen!

Replenish

Restore Skins Natural Hydration

Increase the hydration level of the skin, improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

One of the most important things you can do to keep your skin looking smooth and soft is to keep it hydrated. Moisture in the skin brings nutrients to skin cells and helps to flush away toxins. Hydration also reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Most individuals do not understand the importance of a healthy skin barrier. The outermost part of your skin (stratum corneum) is designed to keep moisture in and keep germs, bacteria, and irritants out. Individuals with healthy skin barrier function can enjoy more vibrant, blemish-free skin because their skin is doing its job effectively.

One way of keeping your skin hydrated is by drinking plenty of water. This internally hydrates your skin and delivers many other health benefits beyond healthy skin barrier function. Moreover, quality skincare products can also help to REPLENISH moisture levels in your skin.

SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Gel is an oil-free moisturizer that contains hyaluronic acid and vitamin B5. Hyaluronic acid is a natural hydrator that attracts water and provides extra hydration to your skin. The Village Dermatology HA Peptide Therapy is another ultra-hydrating skincare product that can give you smoother, softer, brighter, firmer skin.

Botox vs. Skincare Products: Which is Better?

The goals are very similar – vibrant, smooth, beautiful skin – but Botox and skincare products are two very different approaches to achieving this goal. Today we would like to explain some key differences between treatments like Botox and topical skincare products like serums, creams, and moisturizers.

First… What is Botox, and how does it work?

Botox is a particular brand name for a product in the neuromodulator category. Other products are in this category, but Botox is the largest by far. Botox is a purified protein that prevents the underlying muscle from contracting to varying degrees based on your provider\’s dosage. Because the skin that lies on top of the muscle is not being \”folded\” onto itself, creating more lines and wrinkles, your skin has the ability to rejuvenate without forming more lines and wrinkles. This helps reduce wrinkles on the forehead, between the brows, and around the eyes.

And… What do skincare products do?

Skincare products like serums, creams, and moisturizers penetrate into varying depths of the skin and help to improve the appearance and texture of the skin from within. Different ingredients in each skincare product have different effects, such as helping to fight breakouts, stimulating the skin to make more collagen, or protecting the skin from the harmful effects of the sun.

Botox vs. Skincare Products: Key Differences

How They Work

As mentioned above, Botox is an injection treatment that works by temporarily limiting the amount of contracting in specific facial muscles. Skincare products contain ingredients that repair and support the skin from within and protect the skin\’s surface.

Convenience

Botox treatments are performed in a doctor\’s office. On average, a single Botox treatment can last 3-4 months. This means you will need to visit your Botox provider roughly 3 times a year to maintain your results. The treatment itself is quick and takes less than 10 minutes.

Skincare products, on the other hand, can be conveniently used in the comfort of your home and are completely pain-free. Plus, you can purchase quality medical-grade products from the comfort of your home online through retail providers like Village Dermatology.

Effectiveness

If you want to get rid of existing fine lines and wrinkles that are present even when your face is relaxed, Botox is the gold standard. Botox is a non-surgical option that can quickly and effectively reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes and on the forehead, giving you instantly smoother and more youthful-looking skin.

Onset of Action

Botox works almost immediately. You can see a noticeable improvement in your skin in 3-4 days. Most people get the full results of Botox in 10-14 days. Skincare products can take 3 months or more to make a noticeable difference. This is because your skin begins to grow and develop healthier skin over time, not immediately.

Duration of Results

Botox results are temporary. This means if you want to maintain your smooth skin, you\’ll have to go back to your Botox provider roughly 3 times in a 12-month period.

Skincare products produce results that are also temporary. If you stop using the products consistently, then you can expect your results to begin to diminish eventually. This is because the aging process does not stop. However, as long as you consistently use quality products on your skin, you can expect these results to continue as well.

Risk of Side Effects

Botox is a very safe procedure when performed by a licensed and experienced provider. Generally, the most common side effects are minor redness at the injection, which goes away after about 15 minutes.

Skincare products are very safe as long as you choose the right type of product for your skin. If you are not sure whether a specific product will suit your skin, you can consult with our Skincare Specialists at our Skin for Life Boutique.

Botox vs. Skincare Products: Which one is better?

Here\’s the thing… you don\’t have to choose one over the other. Both Botox and skincare products have an important role to play in helping you look your best. In fact, most of our clients here at Village Dermatology compliment their Botox treatments with effective skincare. This is a great skincare practice and helps protect and maintain the investment you have made in your skin.

What are peptides in skincare products, and how do they work?

Every time you log on to the internet or browse your supermarket shelves, there’s a new trend in skincare that claims to work magic for your skin. And it’s impossible to tell whether the latest trend is just plain hype or actually good for your skin.

A large percentage of the time, these skincare products promote something called “peptides.” In order to understand how these claims are made, you need to have a general understanding of what peptides are and what they do for the skin.

What exactly are peptides?

Peptides or polypeptides are short chains of amino acids. Amino acids are the building blocks that combine to form proteins such as collagen, elastin, and keratin. These proteins are present in abundant quantities in the skin. They give the skin its structure, texture, resilience, and strength.

As you age, your body starts making fewer skin proteins like collagen. This causes your skin to become thinner, drier, rougher, and less elastic. Also, the loss of collagen in the skin leads to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles.

Using skincare products containing peptides can provide your skin with the raw materials to make these essential proteins that keep your skin looking smoother, brighter, firmer, and youthful.

Peptides in skincare

How do peptides work for skin?

Generally speaking, you cannot simply put collagen on your skin because the actual collagen molecule itself is too large to be absorbed through the skin. So, a lot of individuals take collagen supplementation by mouth to get the benefits. However, peptides in skincare products can penetrate into the skin and provide the raw material to build collagen and other proteins in the deeper layers of skin.

When you use a skincare product containing peptides, the peptide acts as a signal to the skin cells, telling them to make more collagen and elastin.

Like most things in life, the quality and quantity of the peptides you are using are essential for good results. All of the peptide products used at Village Dermatology are from medical skincare companies specializing in these products.

What are the benefits of peptides in skincare products?

As mentioned, peptides are the building blocks of essential proteins in the skin that keep the skin looking youthful and beautiful. Some of the advantages of using peptide-containing skincare products include:

  • Creates a stronger skin barrier: Peptides help to strengthen the structure of the skin and create a stronger barrier.
  • Reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles: Peptides promote increased collagen formation, making skin appear smoother, plumper, and firmer with fewer lines and wrinkles.
  • Gives you tighter skin: Peptides are needed to make a protein called elastin, which helps the skin appear firmer and tighter.
  • Eases inflammation and reduces breakouts: Some peptides have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, helping calm breakouts, relieve inflammation, and repair damaged skin.

Can I use peptide skincare products instead of Botox for wrinkles?

It’s important to understand that peptides are not magic bullets. They are definitely beneficial for your skin, but they can’t improve the quality of your skin overnight.

Botox works in a completely different way from skincare products. Botox treatments work to soften the muscle contractions that make static lines and wrinkles appear on the skin. While Botox treatments produce quicker effects in reducing wrinkles, they do not support the skin from within or improve the quality of skin long-term. Combining quality skincare products with a treatment like Botox can significantly enhance your results over just using one or the other.

How to choose the best peptide skincare products?

With the plethora of skincare products on the market, it can be overwhelming to choose the best ones. Here are some tips on choosing the best skincare products with peptides (they may be listed as palmitoyl on the label):

  • Choose the right product formulation: It is best to invest in a skincare product such as a serum or moisturizer that contains peptides. These products sit on the skin for a long time, allowing the peptides to be absorbed into the skin. Something like a cleanser with peptides is less likely to be effective because you wash it off almost immediately.
  • Read the label: Skincare products contain several different ingredients. Some ingredients, such as vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, antioxidants, and niacinamide, complement peptides and work efficiently together, while others like AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids) can make peptides less effective by breaking the bonds between the chains of amino acids.
