Blue Light Treatment
What is Blue Light Treatment?
Blue Light Treatment, also known as Photodynamic Therapy (PDT), offers a more comfortable alternative to freezing precancers. PDT is an in-office treatment for actinic keratoses, commonly referred to as precancerous lesions, which can appear on the face, scalp, chest, arms, and legs.
What Happens During a Treatment?
During PDT, a topical medication called Ameluz is applied to the affected areas. This medication is absorbed by damaged cells, making them highly sensitive to light. When exposed to blue light, these damaged cells are destroyed, including those below the skin’s surface that may not yet be visible to the naked eye.
Most patients experience minimal downtime, with some showing mild sunburn-like symptoms and occasional peeling. The extent of downtime can vary based on the severity of sun damage. Typically, follow-up treatments within one to three months result in less downtime.
Insurance Coverage
Blue Light Treatment is often covered by Medicare, BCBS of Alabama, and other insurance providers, as long as clinical criteria are met. Be sure to check with your insurance provider to confirm coverage.

Blue Light Treatment Process
Step 1: Application of Topical Medicine
One of our providers will apply Ameluz to the treatment area in-office. The medication will remain on your skin for one to three hours, depending on the area being treated.
Step 2: BLU-U Light Treatment
Once the medication has been absorbed, you’ll sit under a blue light for exactly 16 minutes and 40 seconds. Afterward, your provider will apply sunscreen and give you post-care instructions.
Important Aftercare
Important Aftercare:
It’s crucial to avoid all direct and indirect sunlight for 48 hours after treatment. Exposing treated skin to light can cause severe blistering. We recommend staying indoors and away from windows during this period.
